Since 610 AD, Delhi has been a very important place for rulers. She served as the capital city for most of her rulers. Known by many names, Delhi hides enormous archeological and heritage treasures under her soil.

Me(Vikram) and My best friend Gaurav tried to explore few of these. We found that Delhi was ruled by many Dynasties , starting from the Pandavas, and reaching to…

  • Tomaras-Chauhans (Prithviraj Chauhan )   [736 - 1192]
  • The Mamluks   [1206-1290]
  • The Khilji Dynasty    [1290-1320]
  • The Tughlaqs    [1320-1413]
  • The Sayyids    [1414-1451]
  • Lodhi Dynasties    [1451-1526]
  • The Mughal Dynasty    [1526-1857]
  • The Britishers    [1857-1947]

Here’s and abstract from Wikipedia

The modern city contains the remnants of several successive ancient cities including:

  1. ‘Dhilli’ was founded by Tomar Rajput ruler, Anangpal according to Vibudh Shridhar and other later authors[1].
  2. Lal Kot built by the Tomar was renamed Qila Rai Pithora after Prithvi Raj Chauhan. It was a thirteen-gated fort in Delhi. Prithviraj, a Chauhan king was the second last Hindu king of Delhi.
  3. Siri, built by Alauddin Khilji in 1303;
  4. Tughluqabad, built by Ghiyasuddin Tughluq (1321-1325);
  5. Jahanpanah, built by Muhammad bin Tughluq (1325-1351);
  6. Feroz Shah Kotla, built by Firuz Shah Tughluq (1351-1388);
  7. Purana Qila, built by Sher Shah Suri and Dinpanah built by Humayun, both in the area near the speculated site of the legendaryIndraprastha (1538-1545); and
  8. Shahjahanabad, the walled city built by Shah Jahan from 1638 to 1649, containing the Lal Qila and the Chandni Chowk. It was the capital of the Mughal Empire during Shah Jahan’s reign. It is presently referred to as “Old Delhi“.
  9. Lutyens’ Delhi or New Delhi, the city built by the British on the south-west
  10. Modern Delhi, often still referred to as ‘Nai Dilli’ (New Delhi) which includes all of the above.

I will keep posting in this regard. But for the first cut…

Me and Gaurav went to the Mehrauli area, which was once the capital of Chauhans (Qila Rai Pithora) and later was used by Mamluks and Qutubs. We saw places like Hazrat Bakhtiar Kaki’s dargah, Jahaz Mahal, Zafar Mahal and then we reached the history rich Archelogical Park of Mehrauli. It hosts more than 80 protected monuments like Balban’s Tomb, Jamali Kamali Mosque, Rajon ki Baoli and many other. Keep reading my blog posts to know more…
